My memory - Kindergarden

Day 14 - Your earliest memory

First off, I just want to say a huge HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my sweet little 3 year old nephew.  He lives 24 hours driving distance from me, so I got to face time (like skype but for apple users) with him and my sister and my newborn nephew towards the end.  He is so full of energy and reminds me a lot of his Mama when she was that age (my sister is 12 years younger than I am).  I love these boys so much and it kills me that they live so far away.

Second:  I made 105 cakeballs (ok 110, but I had to have a few taste tests for the fam).  97 of them made it into the building.   There was a sad mishap with the container falling on the ground and sadly had to be left there to die in the hot Oklahoma day (97 yesterday according to my car).  They were consumed by nearly forty kids and a few parents.  I came home with 5 (only because I told everyone I ran out).  Everyone LOVED them.  Kids mainly stuck with the chocolate and vanilla.  Parents raved about the strawberry lemonade.  I had a few kids begging to come live at my house.

Ok, now on to my memory.  First, I vaguely remember being carried to my neighbor's house by neighbor during a flood once.  I think I was 3 or 4.  Just vaguely though.  The vivid memory that I know is all mine is my first day of Kindergarden.  I remember holding my mom's hand and not wanting to let go because "school was scary".  I can't remember what I was wearing, but I remember the giant rug on the floor that had the alphabet and numbers on it.  There were wooden cubby bookshelves against one wall.  We had cubbies to put our supplies in.  There were also tables on one side of the room with more cubby style bookshelves.  I remember bins and bins of blocks and puzzles that went in those cubbies.  My teacher, Mrs. Meskimens (who still teaches...funny story at the end...not funny haha, but funny odd) had a brace on her leg (I believe she has MS).  She calmed me down and got my to interact with the other kids in the room.  The very first person she introduced me to was my best friend all through grade school (even the multiple school changes).  Her name was Amanda.  She had blond hair and it was in piggy tails.  The piggy tails were curly.  I wanted her hair.  We stuck together that day.  I remember coloring at the table with her, and we sat next to each other in story time.  My next memory is very vivid.  I can still see it when I close my eyes.  We played farmer in the dale.  My new best friend Amanda got picked to be the cat.  She picked me to be the mouse.  I was so excited that I got to pick the cheese.  I picked this boy named Micah.  And, that is pretty much all I really remember about that day.  I remember leaving school and ready to go back the next day.

Ok, now my story.  When my daughter's first grade class went on a zoo field trip, I ran into my Mrs. Meskimens.  She now teaches first grade at the same elementary school I went to.  She now uses two braces to get around, but she was still doing what she did best...making a positive impact on children's lives.  All my cousin's that lived in that town, had her as well.  When she retires, she is going to have one heck of a party because she is very well loved.

Day 14: Texture - I love the texture on this bench outside the theater.

  1. You made 105 what? What'd I miss.... need to go back through. :)

Happy burfday to your little nephew. My three year old is a reaaaaaaaal piece of... um... work. I am happiest when he naps!

I remember a kindergarten classroom much like that as well. My teacher's name was Mrs. Stephenson and I thought she was SO TALL! But she was beautiful.... and I wanted long legs and to wear high heels like her. It takes an act of God to get me in them now.

    1. I do have a few slow days coming up. I am excited to just sit and read for a little bit. I think I definitely want a pedicure. After Monday night, my insanely busy days are over for at least a week. haha

    1. What can I say, baking relaxes me. I was going to make cookies too, but I ran out of time. I am in the mood to make cookies now, though...hmmm. When we are neighbors you can come over any time you want and I will make cake balls. :)

  8. Nice nice story, she sounds like one heck of a teacher. We need more like her. A good teacher truly does impact children for years and years. And yet some folks fail to respect teacher and think it's not an important job.
